Bio
Shrikanth (Shri) Narayanan is University Professor and Niki & C. L. Max Nikias Chair in Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), where he holds academic appointments as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Pediatrics, Research Director of the Information Science Institute, and Director of the Ming Hsieh Institute. Prior to USC he was with AT&T Bell Labs and AT&T Research. Shri Narayanan and his Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory (SAIL) at USC focus on developing engineering approaches to understand the human condition (including voice, face and biosignal based biometrics) and in creating machine intelligence technologies that can support and enhance human experiences. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, IEEE, ISCA, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association for Psychological Science, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and the National Academy of Inventors. He has published over 900 papers and has been granted eighteen U.S. patents.
Shri Narayanan is VP-Education for IEEE Signal Processing Society (2020-), an Editor for the Computer Speech and Language Journal and an Associate Editor for the APSIPA TRANSACTIONS ON SIGNAL AND INFORMATION PROCESSING. He was also previously Editor in Chief for IEEE JOURNAL OF SELECTED TOPICS IN SIGNAL PROCESSING and an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS OF SPEECH AND AUDIO PROCESSING (2000–2004), IEEE SIGNAL PROCESSING MAGAZINE (2005–2008), IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MULTIMEDIA (2008-2011), the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SIGNAL AND INFORMATION PROCESSING OVER NETWORKS (2014-2015), IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AFFECTIVE COMPUTING (2010-2016), and the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (2009-2017). He is a recipient of several honors including the 2015 Engineers Council’s Distinguished Educator Award, a Mellon award for mentoring excellence, the 2005 and 2009 Best Journal Paper awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society and serving as its Distinguished Lecturer for 2010-11, a 2018 ISCA Best Journal Paper award, and serving as an ISCA Distinguished Lecturer for 2015-16, the Willard R. Zemlin Memorial Lecturer for ASHA in 2017 and the 2020 Sustained Accomplishment Award from ACM ICMI.
Research Summary
Shri Narayanan's interdisciplinary research interests are in human-centered signal processing and machine intelligence -- with an emphasis on designing inclusive technologies -- and their societal applications including in human health and wellbeing, education and the media arts.
He and his laboratory focuses on approaches that address key societal needs. Bridging science and engineering, they pioneer behavioral signal processing and behavioral machine intelligence, affective computing, multimodal signal processing, computational media intelligence and computational speech science.
These are enabled through fundamental advances in audio, speech, language, image, video and bio signal processing, human and environment sensing and imaging, human-centered machine learning as well as applications developing speech, human language technologies, conversational and multimodal systems.
